A Future Draft is a reading of whatever you are trying to work out — a whole organisation or a specific situation inside it. What is true about it now, what has become possible that has not been noticed, and the most ambitious version of it the evidence can honestly carry, written specifically enough that you can disagree with any line of it. It is written past what you would have called realistic, because most plans are still built around limits that expired recently. Everything is labelled, so you can see where it is reporting and where it is reasoning. It starts from the reading you already have, so the hour together is spent on what an outsider could not see rather than on catching Parker up. That is why one hour is enough. Two rounds are included, and both happen in writing rather than in a room. Each time, Parker tells you exactly what he needs; how quickly you get it to him is what sets the pace. The first round is usually about accuracy — what he got wrong, what he could not have known, what he read as settled that is still contested. The second is rarely about accuracy at all. Once the picture holds, what changes is the ambition: how far this could actually go, and whether what is in front of you is ambitious enough to be worth doing. Most people who go further afterwards do so because of what those rounds showed them rather than because of the Draft itself. Everything in it comes from one vantage point, yours, and by the end you can see where that runs out — what you are asserting rather than knowing, and how much of what matters was never written down anywhere. One vantage point can produce an honest picture. It cannot tell you whether anyone else recognises it, and that is usually the thing worth knowing.
